At dusk, a steep flight of cobblestone stairs winds down a Lisbon hillside toward the Tagus estuary. A woman in a white apron sweeps the doorway of a whitewashed house beneath an ornate black iron lantern. Along the stone walls and curved buttresses, street lamps glow with warm yellow light against the falling twilight. Down in the harbor, sailboats glide across water reflecting the vivid violet and amber hues of a fiery sunset.

This photo is part of The Mender of Lantern Street, a story told one torn photograph at a time. In Belém, my grandmother photographed the river and a sunny morning with Tomás before receiving an urgent telegram from home about her ailing father.
